Among the branches.

This project aims to conceptualize a narrative around death and time by analyzing 19th-century poetry from Emily Brontë and Emily Dickinson. Using metaphors from nature, it seeks to represent the phases before, during, and after death.

Proposal:

To create an installation that stages the narrative of death and its relationship with time. The narrative is drawn from the metaphors of these writers and is expressed through an installation that employs the metaphorical language of nature, along with the visual, fictional, and imaginative elements facilitated by cyanotype and weaving.

Narrative

This project explores the concept of time as a symbol of death. To develop this narrative, I focused on three main themes that are prevalent in poetry and stem from the aforementioned concepts.

These themes will guide the temporal progression of death, encompassing each stage from the perspective of the past, life after death, and the intermediate point between life and death.

Creation Process

For this project, I concentrated on materializing and staging the first stage of death: Remembrance.

To represent the initial phase of the death timeline, Remembrance, I began by portraying the past and the traces we leave behind in life. These traces, which are remnants of our time on Earth, are reflected through memories, feelings, objects, and places we've encountered.

As a case study, I focused on my grandfather's passing. This stage allowed me to reflect on its significance within my family's memories. I searched for photos of moments or places that held importance to both my aunts and grandmother, as they likely did for my grandfather. Although there are very few photographs of my grandfather, each one holds great value because it was taken at a special moment or for a specific purpose. Among these photos are images of the house where they lived with my grandfather, photos that capture his importance in my aunts' and mother's childhoods, and the places or objects that evoke memories for them.
